The Pittsburgh Desi Guide

Everything you need to know about settling in, getting around, exploring the East Coast, finding community, and making the most of the Steel City โ€” from a desi perspective.

Pittsburgh Cityscape
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Relocating to a new city can be daunting. I began researching Pittsburgh just a week prior to my arrival, having minimal time to prepare for my first assignment abroad. To my pleasant surprise, settling into the Steel City was remarkably seamless.

After a brief period of orientation, Pittsburgh truly felt like home. The city is renowned for its welcoming nature, and for the Indian diaspora specifically, there is an established and thriving ecosystem that makes you feel connected almost immediately.

๐ŸŒจ Navigating the Weather

Pittsburgh winters are notoriously harsh, often freezing even without snow. Proper winter clothing is absolutely essential. If you are arriving from India, purchase quality winter gear immediately upon arrival โ€” a warm scarf, insulated gloves, and a good beanie are indispensable.

Because Downtown is situated at the confluence of three rivers, the wind chill makes it feel significantly colder than the actual temperature. With the right layers, however, you can still enjoy an outdoor coffee in January.

Quick Tip

Buy winter gear at Walmart within your first few days. Don't wait until the first snowfall โ€” stores sell out quickly.

๐ŸšŒ Public Transportation

The city's public transport system is centrally focused around Downtown, served by Port Authority buses and the 'T' (light rail). Fares require exact change if paying in cash.

It is highly recommended to purchase a ConnectCard from local grocery stores like Giant Eagle. This reloadable card makes transit seamless and saves money on regular commutes.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Social Networks and Community

Pittsburgh boasts numerous WhatsApp and Telegram groups tailored to the Indian community. While many are invitation-only, our Telegram group "Indian Community Pittsburgh" is the largest in the region.

Active members frequently post regarding ride shares, moving sales, event information, and trusted local services. Joining is the single fastest way to feel at home.

โœˆ๏ธ East Coast Getaways

Pittsburgh is perfectly positioned for rapid, inexpensive weekend trips to major East Coast destinations. Here are the easiest excursions:

  • Washington D.C.

An incredibly convenient overnight trip. Catch the MegaBus late Friday night, arrive at D.C.'s Union Station at sunrise. Use the hop-on/hop-off tourist buses to see landmarks before the overnight bus home.

  • New York City

Overnight bus to Penn Station. New York has a dizzying array of attractions โ€” an aggressive day-trip is achievable and highly affordable.

  • Niagara Falls

A quintessential visit. Just a 4-hour drive north of Pittsburgh, easily done as a single-day road trip. Book the Maid of the Mist tickets online to bypass lines.

๐Ÿชท ISKCON New Vrindaban

Located in West Virginia, less than two hours south of Pittsburgh, New Vrindaban is a gorgeous sanctuary and major headquarters for the ISKCON movement. Packed with events year-round, you can witness beautiful temple architecture, ponds teeming with fish, and freely roaming peacocks.

A complimentary lunch is served at major events. Just be cautious driving the mountain roads during harsh winters.

๐Ÿก Where To Stay and Live

Pittsburgh has specific enclaves where the Indian ecosystem thrives:

Green Tree Road

This corridor is historically the most popular starting point. Incredible proximity to Indian groceries (like Patel Brothers) and restaurants. Apartment complexes such as Carriage Park host one of the largest Indian communities in the region. Easy public transit access to Downtown.

The Suburbs

Upper St. Clair ยท South Fayette ยท Wexford ยท Cranberry
