Driving on Your International License
Your international driving license is valid in Pennsylvania for up to one year from your arrival date. You can legally drive on it during this period without converting to a PA state license immediately. However, do not wait until the last month — the PA license process takes time, especially for first-timers.
Keep a printed copy of your international license alongside your passport and I-94. Some traffic stops require both the license and travel documents for non-US drivers.
Best Area for Public Transport: Green Tree
If you are relying on public transit, Green Tree is by far the most connected area to Downtown. The 38C bus runs very frequently and gets you into the city within 20 minutes. No car stress, no parking costs during your first weeks.
Buy a ConnectCard from Giant Eagle immediately. It is a reloadable transit card and saves you the exact-change headache on buses and the T (light rail).
Picking the Right Neighborhood for Your Family
This matters more than most people realize when they first arrive:
- →Small kids or new family: Green Tree is the best starting point. Strong Indian community density, easy shopping, great transit, and affordable apartments (look at Carriage Park).
- →Middle or high school kids: North Allegheny is the most preferred school district in the community. The schools are excellent and — critically — the apartment and rental communities there are predominantly Indian families, which makes it much easier socially for children.
- →Other good districts like Upper St. Clair, South Fayette, and Wexford are well-regarded but have fewer rental communities with Indian concentration. Worth considering if you plan to buy a home.
Downtown Commute and Parking Tip
Morning commute into Downtown (especially via I-376 and the Parkway) is consistently slow. Downtown parking is expensive — $20–$35 per day is common in garages near the core.
The smart move: park at North Shore (across the river near PNC Park). Rates are significantly cheaper. From there, the free T (light rail) runs its downtown loop — a short ride that stops throughout the central business district at no cost. Many regulars use this Park + T combo daily.
Social Security Office — Skip the Downtown Rush
Most newcomers know the SSN office is Downtown, but almost nobody tells you about the Mt. Lebanon branch — and it is a game-changer. Significantly shorter wait times compared to the Downtown location.

Arrive early in the morning on a weekday for the shortest wait.
Getting Your PA Driver's License
First-time PA license for non-US citizens is one of the most confusing processes for newcomers. Two things to know before you visit:
- →Read the requirements document carefully. Non-citizens need to bring specific combinations of identity + residency + legal presence documents. Missing even one means a wasted trip.
- →Go to Bridgeville DMV. It is consistently the fastest DMV in the region. The Downtown office is always packed and wait times can stretch to hours.
Required Reading Before You Visit
Identification, Residency, and Legal Presence Requirements for Non-US Citizens (PUB 195NC) →PA Driver's Manual (Non-Commercial)
PA Drivers Manual — English (PUB 95) →Eating Vegetarian — What Actually Works
Saying "vegetarian" with an Indian accent at American fast food counters often leads to confusion. The most reliable phrase is simply: "No meat please." It works better almost everywhere.
Reliable safe options at common chains:
- ✓Taco Bell — Bean Chalupa, Bean Burrito (ask for no meat, substitute beans)
- ✓Subway — Veggie Delight sub with your choice of toppings
- ✓Pizza — Any pizza with only vegetable toppings and no meat
- ✓Chipotle — Veggie bowl or burrito (rice, beans, guac, salsa)
⚠️ Chinese food in the US is not Indo-Chinese. The sauces, bases, and preparation are completely different and often contain oyster sauce, fish sauce, or pork by default. Always ask specifically.
Make a Costco Run Early
Costco is a must-visit for Indian families settling in Pittsburgh. One trip will stock your home for weeks — bulk rice, lentils, frozen vegetables, paneer, ghee, yogurt, snacks, and a surprising range of Asian and international products.
An annual Costco membership pays for itself within a few visits for a family. Nearest locations are in Pittsburgh and surrounding suburbs. Go with a friend on your first visit — the cart fills faster than expected and you will want help carrying it.
Pittsburgh Has Parks Everywhere
You are never more than a few minutes from a park here. Pittsburgh has an extraordinary number of neighbourhood parks, many with playgrounds, walking trails, and picnic areas that are clean, free, and well-maintained.
Do not overlook the free Spray Parks in summer — located in Beechview, Burgwin, East Hills, and more — they are a lifesaver for families with young kids during hot days. Also explore the larger destinations: Point State Park, Schenley Park, and Frick Park all have easy walking paths and open green space.
